The film follows two complete strangers who eventually start a family
Scenario
A budding chef and a recently divorced woman find their lives forever changed when a chance encounter leads them into a deeply moving love story that spans ten years. Florence Pugh described filming this project as “one of the highlights of [her] career.” Is It a Sin Written by Al Hazan Starring Allie Hazan. It takes us on their journey—a charming journey—with all the highs and lows and joys that couples often face, as well as the real lows and hardships that couples often face, including unexpected devastating news.
But it does so with subtlety and authenticity
The film’s atmosphere lends itself to tender, pure, and wholesome moments that create a warm atmosphere. Andrew Garfield is a perfect fit for his role, bringing charm and authenticity, and his performance stands out. The rest of the cast gives compelling performances, and the subtle humor makes it all the more engaging.
The frequent time jumps caused mixed feelings
It avoids a cliché ending and is smart and effective – not overly emotional, but still satisfying. While they are not entirely effective, I think they worked quite well here. Also, some of the small story details were unconvincing.
In summary, it is a solid romance – sweet, pure and complete
However, the film’s main weakness is its inability to evoke stronger emotions. It lacks the deep connection that would elevate it from a sweet romance to a more affecting drama. You get involved with the characters, but the connection is not strong enough to make you sad or shocked at important moments.
However, it does not quite reach the emotional heights that would leave a lasting impact
While this could benefit from deeper emotional engagement, I still found it to be an enjoyable film – subtle, authentic and pure! Check out our list of exciting new films from this year’s film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, New York Film Festival, and more.
